Indian Psychology

Indian psychology is deeply rooted in ancient Indian textual traditions, drawing insights from texts like the Caraka-saṁhitā, Bhagavad-gītā and Yogavāsiṣṭha. It explores the nature of the mind, self, and emotions through philosophies such as Nyaya, Samkhya, Vedanta and Ayurveda. Its key concepts include karma, free will, the Triguna theory (sattva, rajas, tamas), the connection between mind and body through yoga and meditation. Indian psychology analyses emotions through rasa and bhava theory as described in the Natyashastra by Bharata Muni. It also integrates indigenous therapeutic approaches, including yogic psychotherapy, mindfulness meditation, music therapy, and ayurveda-based healing. By combining ancient Indian philosophy, indigenous therapeutic approaches, and scientific inquiry, Indian psychology offers a holistic approach to mental health and well-being.
